Crazy Semester!

IMG_1130What a crazy and exciting school year so far!  Every day we have 22 Norcross High School students take our elective Bible class called New Testament Survey. 22 students studying the Bible everyday and applying it to life.  How incredible is that?  This semester they have learned all about the life and teachings of Jesus, have wrestled with what His resurrection means for us, and now they are finishing up the semester by doing presentations on New Testament letters.  It’s been a great semester watching these students grow in their faith.

I feel like this class has a positive impact on my faith as well as teaching the history of Christianity. We learn from every book of the Bible and are able to go out and share what we’ve learned. It’s a great class and I love taking it. Our teacher rocks and I can’t wait for second semester!

Student
I hope that you recognize the value of this ministry and will consider joining our mission by supporting us with an end-of-year gift.  We have experienced growth this year and we are trying to keep up financially.Your financial gift will help us to continue to fulfill our purpose to provide the best class Norcross High School students will ever take by giving them an opportunity to investigate and experience the message of Jesus during the school day, as one of their elective classes.

I’ve learned that forgiving can take time but it’s worth it! I have also learned that nothing you do can turn you away from God’s love. He chose one of the people who killed followers of Jesus to spread the word of God and then Peter someone who denied Jesus 3 times became one of the greatest disciples.

Student
I want to assure you that your support is making a difference.  It is evident everyday as light bulbs turn on and as students slowly grow in their knowledge of and love for God.If you’d like to mail a check, please make payable to:

Former Student, Bryant Henderson, on the Search for Significance

Bryant Henderson, class of 2013, state champion football player and Norcross CLC alum, shares his thoughts about how to find true significance in a competitive world.  The post is found on the Iron and Fire Ministries website.  Please head over there and check it!

photo-11“Everywhere we look in life, we find conflicting views on achieving true fulfillment and happiness. There are many different worldly avenues through which one can search for significance, whether through being successful in the business field, having popularity throughout social circles, getting attention from the right girls, you name it…”  read more

The Home Stretch

Emolarge1Prom is behind us, spring break is over, and the pollen is in the air.  All signs that the school year is coming to a close.  It has been a good year in so many ways – most importantly in the ways our students have grown and wrestled with what a Christian worldview is.  This week the students have been considering how we are (mis)led by our emotions many times instead of taking the time to stop and think of an appropriate response.  An emotional response, especially for (but not limited to!) students in this age group, is typically what comes first, and many times leads them into attitudes and actions they later regret.

Currently we have 24 students signed up for the fall!  We are excited about that number.  It is about the maximum number we can handle, but not too big to lose the intimacy we try to create.  We are already praying for those 24 students and the positive impact we will be able to have on them.

IMG_0495Could you sponsor one of those 24 students?  We are looking for 24 families to sponsor each of next year’s 24 students by praying for them and financially supporting their education in our class.  It costs about $1000 per student over the course of the school year or $100/month for the 10 month school year running from August through May.  Your sponsorship will help rescue, transform, and train Norcross High School students to be a light in their world.  It is a great investment.  If you are interested, please email everett@norcrossclc.com or go here to see where to mail checks.

Guest Speakers from Around the World!

Matt and Forrest planned a special week of guest speakers that ended today.  The students enjoyed learning about different cultures and were challenged to contemplate who or what shapes their beliefs and actions.

Palestine flagTuesday – Hatem Elsayegh from Palestine.  Hatem grew up in an Islamic world and converted to Christianity.  He emphasized the need for understanding opportunities around us to represent Christ.  Hatem is a brilliant man with two graduate degrees from Duke University.

Virgin_MWednesday – Pastor Alex Villasana from Mexico.  Alex’s understanding of Jesus was developed from being raised in a traditional Latin American Catholic background.  As he grew older, he began to evaluate the faith of his youth against his understanding of Jesus in the Scriptures and transformed his faith from a set of rules and meaningless (to him) rituals into a deep relationship with Christ.  Now Alex is a church planter trying to help other people experience a real relationship with Jesus.  On a side note, we found out in class that Alex hails from the same Mexican city as does the mother of one of our students!

kanji-confucianism-tattoo-symbolsThursday – Pastor David Lee from Korea.  David talked about the distinctness of Korean culture in which society plays a much bigger role in one’s life than does the American notion of individualism.  David shared how Confucianism is an important part of his culture, and his journey led him away from the path of his culture into a personal relationship with God through Jesus.  David was a pastor at a United Methodist Church in Duluth, but has now started a church to reach all kinds of different types of people in the community – people who might not feel comfortable in a more traditional church experience.

love-your-money

FridayEverett returned to class to talk about American culture and the values and attitudes that compete with the teachings of Jesus and the Bible and how to be transformed by changing the way we think (Rom 12:2).  Everett talked about his own struggle with craving material wealth versus the warnings of the Bible to avoid the love of money because of the destruction it can bring in our lives.
