The Kingdom of God in Real Life

Jesus talks about the “kingdom of God” as something that is “near” and “in you.”  The kingdom of God is alive and active now.  I have loved this quote for many years, but I can’t remember from where it came.

The Kingdom of God was central to Jesus’ teaching, and for good reason. However, for him and his disciples, the idea of God’s kingdom was nothing so trivial as a far off, otherworldly place. Rather, for Jesus, God’s Kingdom was an inspiring vision of a religious, political, economic, and social reality, grounded in the Being and activity of God, which had a visible, measurable dimension as well as an invisible, non-measurable (spiritual) dimension.

The kingdom is both here among us and something we look forward to in the future.  It is both spiritual and human, and anyone who is surrendered to accomplishing the will of God is helping to build the kingdom.  Anyone, regardless of background, gender, race, or anything else, can participate in God’s kingdom.  Anyone.  Even Norcross High School students.

Today in class we talked about a man who is building the kingdom of God in Harlem.  His life and ministry are remarkable.  You can a brief bio about Geoffrey Canada here, and I promise you will be inspired by watching this video about what they do.  Simply extraordinary.
